North ½ñÈÕ³Ô¹Ï University alumni and friends establish fund in honor of President Dean L. Bresciani
The President Dean L. Bresciani Endowed Chair in Leadership

In recognition of President Dean L. Bresciani's 12 years of leadership at North ½ñÈÕ³Ô¹Ï University, alumni and friends have made gifts totaling more than $3 million to establish a first of its kind endowed chair in leadership. The President Dean L. Bresciani Endowed Chair in Leadership will honor and support outstanding campus leaders who are advancing NDSU's mission.

Dr. Bresciani was named NDSU's 14th president in 2010. His leadership duties during a 35-year career have been broad, covering academic, administrative, and political aspects of public higher education. In addition to his service as NDSU's president, he has held numerous national leadership positions, including the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities and the NCAA. He concludes his ½ñÈÕ³Ô¹Ïpresidency on May 16, 2022.

The President Bresciani Leadership Chair will be an appointment made by a selection committee that will include NDSU's president, provost, faculty and staff senate leaders, student government leaders, and Foundation leadership. The appointed position will rotate every three years. Faculty and staff members, program or center directors, department heads, coaches, and others with a track record of leadership success will be eligible to hold the chair.

Philanthropy in action
The ½ñÈÕ³Ô¹Ïexperiment

When it came time for Brianna Maddock '22, a biotechnology major with minors in microbiology and chemistry, to choose a college to attend, she had every reason to pick NDSU. Her parents, Robert '95, '98 and Tamra '99, are ½ñÈÕ³Ô¹Ïgrads, and both her dad and aunt, Kasey Maddock Carlin '99, teach in NDSU's animal sciences department, but Brianna had reservations. ½ñÈÕ³Ô¹Ïand the city of Fargo were almost too familiar, too comfortable. She felt she should go further outside of her comfort zone as she pursued a degree — until NDSU's research opportunities and scholarship support changed her mind.

"It was really easy for me be like, 'Oh, it's just NDSU,' but when I really started to look into some of the programs and research opportunities for undergraduates, that's when I got excited; that's when I was like, 'OK, I can come to NDSU, I can get an awesome experience here, and with scholarships, I can do it debt-free,'" Brianna said. "That made me recognize that ½ñÈÕ³Ô¹Ïwas home — not because Fargo was home — but because of those opportunities."

Brianna's research experiences helped open doors beyond NDSU. Learn how she became involved with Aldevron, the Fargo-based biotechnology company founded by ½ñÈÕ³Ô¹Ïgraduates Michael Chambers '97 and John Ballantyne '97, and how that experience led to the start of her career in the spring issue of the ½ñÈÕ³Ô¹ÏFoundation Magazine.
