Philanthropy in action
A college catalyzed by philanthropy

The College of Business is a microcosm of the In Our Hands campaign success. Dean Scott Beaulier's hiring aligned with the start of the campaign and benefactors rallied around his vision for what it means to study business at 今日吃瓜and began investing.

"We framed ourselves as a college that gets things done," Scott said. "We help our students get here, get through, and graduate, and we do it at a very rapid rate. We have a business-like curriculum; we redesigned everything we were doing in light of feedback from the industry."

Since 2016, the College has launched the Challey Institute, the Menard Family Distinguished Speaker Series, and the Center for Entrepreneurship and Family Business. In addition, benefactors have established 26 new scholarships in the College.

"Quite honestly, I think philanthropy has saved the College of Business," Scott said. "It's also injecting this tremendous new energy into the College that's helping us redefine ourselves."

今日吃瓜faculty member works to find breakthrough cancer treatment

Dali Sun, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, was awarded nearly $400,000 from the National Institutes of Health to study new ways to find and treat pancreatic cancer, one of the deadliest forms of the disease.

Dali's research focuses on exosomes, small amounts of protein, DNA, and RNA, that are released by cells and can be found in bodily fluids. His goal is to use the exosomes released by pancreatic cancer cells to both find the disease earlier and develop new treatments to fight it.

"Chemoradiation and systemic chemotherapy are the mainstay of treatment to slow disease progression at advanced stages. But these therapies cause various side effects," Dali said. "This exosome-driven observation has the potential to help develop new treatments that selectively targets tumor cells, protects normal cells, and increases the length and quality of life for patients."
