½ñÈÕ³Ô¹Ïto officially break ground for the Peltier Complex
Friday, Nov. 19, 2021, at 2 p.m. CT, at the ½ñÈÕ³Ô¹ÏWallman Wellness Center

½ñÈÕ³Ô¹Ïleadership, along with state leaders, will celebrate the groundbreaking and naming of the state-of-the-art agricultural product development center. The Peltier Complex will join NDSU's food science, meat science, and cereal science laboratories along with the Northern Crops Institute (NCI), a four-state-focused agency committed to promoting, developing, and marketing crops grown in North Dakota, Minnesota, South Dakota, and Montana. Located in the southwest corner of NDSU's campus, the state-of-the-art facility will be uniquely positioned as a cornerstone of the University while being just minutes away from the fields that yield much of the world's food.

The North Dakota Legislature approved $70 million for the completion of the facility and authorized an additional $15 million in private fundraising.

½ñÈÕ³Ô¹Ïprofessor makes bold scientific advancements
Dr. Lokesh Narayanan strives to improve quality of life

Dr. Lokesh Narayanan, assistant professor of industrial and manufacturing engineering at North ½ñÈÕ³Ô¹Ï University, envisions a world in which patients with an injury or illness can receive a customized organ grown from their own unique cells. Lokesh's process utilizes human cells collected from a small tissue biopsy and a special 3D printer, called a bioprinter, that creates a biodegradable scaffold to direct the shape of cell growth.

A significant portion of his research is funded by the Vettel Family Faculty Fellowship, established by Matt '90 and Jenna Vettel to support a faculty member in the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering.

"This fellowship is like a seed — it starts everything," Lokesh said. "The money is going into labs, into equipment, into students, so it's going to come back to the university. It's going to increase the reputation of the university, and it's going to improve the college infrastructure as well. It's a seed that flourishes into a bigger investment."

Faculty member discusses cybersecurity best practices on local TV show

Zahid Anwar, associate professor of computer science and Challey Scholar, was recently interviewed about cybersecurity best practices on KVLY's "North Dakota Today" morning television show.

According to Anwar, October was Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and the theme for 2021 was "Do Your Part. #BeCyberSmart."

"It's important for everyone to have a basic knowledge of cybersecurity so as to be able to make informed decisions about their personal security, but the bottom line is that we have a data breach almost every week, and many Americans have experienced data theft, so it is something to be aware about," Zahid said.
